I recently visited the charming city of Tulum, Mexico, about an hour and a half south of the Cancun airport. All I’ve been hearing from jetsetting New Yorkers and Angelenos is: “you have to go to Tulum!” So, I went – and you know what? – they’re totally right. It’s a spectacular-yet-minimal coastal town, with artistic and quirky boutique hotels, spas, yoga and wellness classes, and exceptional food. Watch some GoPro footage from my trip and my Guide to Tulum below:
Tulum accommodations on the beach can be rustic and power cuts are not uncommon. Be Tulum and Coqui Coqui are the best hotels if you want to stay on the beach, which most people do.
We ate lunch 3 out of the 4 days at Be Tulum, because we loved the ceviche, octopus and grilled fish tacos. Our other favorite spot was Casa Banana, which had the best margarita, fried calamari, and beet salad. If you’re feeling like going in, get the Dulce de Leche crepes. Also, delicious martinis! We did NOT love El Tabano. If you love peppers in all of your food (or a random green olive or two in your guac), you might be able to tolerate this place. Otherwise, steer clear.
Hartwood is the most well known “hot spot” of Tulum, but it’s not exactly everything it’s cracked up to be. Our appetizers and specialty cocktails (watermelon martini) were mediocre, while the entrees (pork ribs) and dessert (cinnamon and sweet corn ice cream) were superb. There are lots of mosquitos, so wear plenty of bug spray and be prepared for the potent smell of citronella smoke. Our favorite dinner of the trip was at Arca, which had opened just 3 days before. We ordered the squash gratin, brussels sprouts, grouper and octopus. To die for!
There is yoga classes being offered everywhere in Tulum. The most beautiful yoga space I went to is without a doubt Sanara Tulum, they have a huge room facing the ocean! There were a total of 3 (!!!) people in our class ($20/per person). It was out-of-this-world having that kind of privacy with the ocean waves crashing in the background. The other two yoga places that I recommend (but didn’t attend classes) are Maya Tulum & Shala Yoga.
Ahau Tulumis a charming hotel with a fantastic juice and smoothie menu! I personally loved the Ginger, Carrot & Lemon juice. Posada Margherita is great too and if you are at Coqui Coqui make sure to order their immunity juice with strawberries, pink grapefruit, lemon, lime and orange. FYI the immunity juice amazing with vodka in it too in case you are feeling festive. A lot of places put chaya, a Mexican tree spinach and a local super food, in their green juices.
For a fun vibey place for adult beverages almost any night of the week, check out Gitano – right next to Hartwood!
You must go to a cenote. Don’t bother seeing the Grand Cenote (it isn’t grand). Go straight for Cenote Dos Ojos, which means “two eyes.” Get a guide to take you snorkeling, it’s spectacular!
If you want to get a massage or spa treatment, the best spots are Yaan Wellness Spa ($$$$$) or Coqui Coqui.
The shopping isn’t amazing in Tulum. You will want to get some gifts a the Coqui Coqui Perfumeria! Our friend Lara Bandler of The Co-Op Agency is loving the tobacco-scented room diffuser we brought back for her.
Thompson Hotels has just announced a new and buzz-worthy boutique hotel, The Cape, opening June 13th to add to their growing roster of hot spots.

Set to the pulse of an urban vibe by night, the warm, contemporary lines of visionary Mexico City architect Javier Sanchez draw you in, ultimately revealing a reflection of Cabo like no other.”
There is much to experience at The Cape, starting with world-renowned Mexican chef Enrique Olvera’s signature exhibition kitchen, Manta, as the culinary centerpiece. I am traveling more frequently than usual lately, which means spending more time in and out of airports/airplanes and, inevitably, more money.
If you’re on a budget, like I am, you likely keep a watchful eye on your spending during your travels. There are some travel costs, however, where the “juice” really is worth the squeeze.
Taxis / Car Service – I learned this the hard way during New York Fashion Week in February when I decided to take an adventure (ahem, becheap) and take the subway from JFK into the city. (Harlem, to be exact.) Sure, it cost less than $15, but the hassle was hardly worth it. Next time, you better believe I’ll be getting an Uber both ways!
Checking A Bag – If you’re traveling for less than a week, a carry on should be just fine. Anything longer than that, and you’ll want to splurge the $50 on checking a bag under the plane. Do you want to spend your vacation doing laundry and/or buying new clothes? Didn’t think so.
In Flight Internet – I used to think that paying for Internet on the plane was a waste of money, until I realized one trip how much money I spent on magazines (almost the same, if not more!). So, if you want to have unlimited access to any entertainment you could possibly want, “GoGo” ahead and get that Internet.
Out of Hotel Breakfast – Breakfast at some hotels can cost you anywhere from $25 and up, so going out to a little cafe or bakery where you’ll spend $10 often makes more sense. However, some all-you-can-eat hotel breakfast buffets are worth the splurge (usually in Europe). Go get ’em tiger!
Extravagant Meal – If you’re a foodie like me, you probably want to order at least one thing at every restaurant in the city you’re visiting. But, sometimes, one extravagant meal is just right. Hone in on the #1 place…the BEST place in any city you’re going! Go there. And get everything!
